Summer Lecture | How Far?!

Perth Observatory

Discover the fascinating world of astronomical distances at this year’s annual Perth Observatory Summer Lecture, where you’ll journey beyond the limits of your ruler and into the vastness of space.

Our distinguished guest speaker, Dr Luke Davies, an Australian Research Council Future Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia’s node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), will present his captivating talk: How Far?! Measuring Distances Larger Than a Ruler

Have you ever wondered how we measure the distance to objects we can never visit—such as the Sun, distant planets, or galaxies at the farthest reaches of the observable Universe? Measuring astronomical distances is a cornerstone of our understanding of the cosmos. It allows us to uncover the inner workings of celestial objects, explore the evolution of the Universe, and understand our place within it.

However, determining these vast distances is no easy feat. For over two millennia, the challenge of measuring cosmic scales has driven scientific innovation and fuelled humanity’s relentless pursuit of knowledge. In this engaging talk, Dr. Davies will delve into the history, key breakthroughs, and cutting-edge techniques used to measure the Universe, spanning an incredible 45 orders of magnitude—from the tiniest sub-atomic particles to the immensity of the observable cosmos.
