Mundaring Weir, Mundaring
Built in 1903, Mundaring Weir is a historic engineering marvel that played a crucial role in the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. Today, visitors can enjoy the impressive dam views while walking right along the wall, explore the No. 1 Pump Station museum (open Sunday afternoons), and picnic amongst kangaroos at the C.Y. O’Connor Hub – named for the weir’s legendary creator. Iconic West Aussie trails pass through the area, be sure to grab a bite of the famous Bibbulmun Track through beautiful jarrah forests. Victoria Dam, Carmel
As Perth’s first water supply dam (1891), Victoria Dam combines historical significance with the natural beauty of the surrounding bushland. A century later, in 1991, the new Victoria Dam was opened upstream, as the original dam wall started to degrade. You can still see the old dam wall too. A 6km loop trail takes you through stunning native bushland with abundant wildflowers in spring. The picnic area features BBQ facilities and tables. Being so close to the Bickley Valley, this is a great spot to explore before a winery lunch too.

Churchman Brook Dam, Bedfordale
Love a peaceful picnic? Head to Churchman Brook Dam, just a short drive from Armadale. The dam was built with the use of horse-drawn carriages, a century ago and it’s still one source of Perth’s drinking water. This dam offers excellent facilities, with an upgrade in 2023. Families will appreciate the well-equipped nature playground, grassy lawns and spacious picnic areas with BBQs.

Serpentine Dam, Serpentine
One of the most impressive of Perth’s dams, Serpentine Dam features a massive wall you can even drive across! Nearby Bistro By The Dam has tasty brunch and lunch options, perched high above Serpentine Dam. This spot has a great nature playground and picnic area next door. Sit inside, or outside on the veranda where there are beautiful water views through the gumtrees. Serpentine Dam is a peaceful place to soak up the sights and sounds of kangaroos, parrots and more native wildlife.

Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow
Fun fact – this man-made dam was created in 1897 to supply water for the steam trains on the nearby Eastern Railway Line. Lake Leschenaultia offers the most recreational activities of all Perth Hills dams. Visitors can swim in designated area, bushwalk, picnic, ride the mountain bike network, rent canoes (available during the summer season), or enjoy stand-up paddleboarding on the calm waters. Walk along the dam wall to begin the 3km flat Lake Loop circuit trail – ideal for casual walkers and bikers. The FLACKSEED Kiosk provides delicious take away refreshments and eats with lake views, while extensive picnic areas and a train themed playground keep families entertained.
