The Big Guide to Mundaring Hills Open Studios

If you’ve ever wanted to peek behind the studio door and see local artists get creative, mark 18–26 October in your calendar. Mundaring Hills Open Studios returns bigger than ever, throwing open the doors to 30 working studios and 4 venues across Perth Hills Mundaring. From Swan View and Greenmount in the foothills through to Chidlow in the east, this annual event is not to be missed.

Shirley Kay – Ceramics

This year’s program brings together 81 artists across a range of mediums. Think landscape paintings that echo nearby jarrah forests, molten-glass vases that look even more spectacular when they catch the light, hand-built ceramics inspired by the hills, and textiles that thread story into stitch. Plus, there’s jewellery, woodwork, sculpture and abstracts, meaning plenty of artistic diversity to keep visitors happily travelling from studio to studio.

Silvana Ferrario – Glass

On this open-studios trail you’re not just viewing finished works in a gallery; you’re stepping into creative spaces where ideas are mid-sentence. Benches scattered with tools, paint brushes bristling with possibility. Artists are on hand to talk process, materials and inspiration, with art demos, workshops and talks dotted across the program for those who like to roll up their sleeves and try something new.

Grab the glossy brochure from the Perth Hills Mundaring Visitor Centre or download it ahead of time. Studios are spread through the leafy villages of the Mundaring region, so it’s easy to add in a coffee break, a bakery stop, or a pub lunch between visits.

Liz Berry – Ceramics

Venues like Amaroo Retreat, the historic Mahogany Inn and Distillery, Mundaring Adult Creative & Learning, and Two Birds (Behind the Post Office) gift shop add extra stop points to your route, each showing multiple artist’s work. Plus, there’s exhibitions showing at the Mundaring Arts Centre.

Pene Turner – Visual Artist

If you happen to be in the Hovea area, be sure to drop by the Mountolive Studio & Garden’s open garden event (18 &19 October) too. They’ll be beautiful spring blooms, a live pottery demonstration, art stalls and more.

Stacy Gardoll – Painting

Whether you come to Mundaring Open Studios for a single day, a weekend break or stretch many studio visits over the two weekends, you’ll leave with more than artworks on your wish list. You’ll hear artists’ stories, an appreciation for their handywork, and make many memories made in the Perth Hills.
