The Ultimate Guide to Perth Hills WanderFest

Crisp air, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and nature packed trails. Head up to the Perth Hills this spring for the inaugural Perth Hills WanderFest.

Perth Hills WanderFest is brand new for 2025! This five-trail hiking series spanning the Perth Hills region will be popping up this 26 – 29 September. Led by knowledgeable expert guides, on each trail you’ll discover the native wildlife that call it home, hear fascinating stories of local history and be sure to pick up plenty of hiking tips along the way.

This celebration of all things trails will also feature exciting satellite events and markets, inviting walkers to linger longer and savour all the Perth Hills has to offer after you’ve enjoyed your wander. Unwind in character-filled historic pubs, refuel at cosy cafés, or extend your adventure by staying overnight in boutique accommodation – from charming cottage stays to luxury forest retreats – and make a memorable weekend of your Perth Hills experience.

Gidgegannup

Beginners: F.R. Berry Reserve, Gidgegannup, City of Swan.

Always wanted to dip your toe into hiking, but not sure where to start? This gentle 3km loop trail is ideal for beginners, families and first-time hikers. F.R.Berry Reserve, nestled in the northern region of the Perth Hills, is a largely undiscovered bushland spot. Featuring a stunning series of cascades, where the Wooroloo Brook tumbles over brilliant berry-like red granite rocks. The wander through dense jarrah, marri, and wandoo woodlands, skirts these ancient granite outcrops. Take a mindful moment at the waterfall lookout to soak it all in, before heading back on the mostly flat trail. With just enough short inclines to add a little adventure, keep your eyes peeled for sunbathing bobtails, rare wildflowers and the majestic endangered Carnaby’s cockatoo along the way.

Mundaring

Accessible: Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow, Shire of Mundaring.

Perth Hills WanderFest is for EVERY body, even if you’re new to hiking! The loop around Lake Leschenaultia is a perfect place to start, and build confidence in a supportive small group. This inclusive guided hike follows the low impact, accessible 3km trail. The gravel path is predominately flat and has benches to rest along the way, making it suitable for wheelchairs, prams or people with walking aids. Support workers and carers are welcomed free of charge. The lake loop is packed with sensory-rich scenery at every turn; the perfect way to connect with nature and spot native wildlife. Afterwards, be sure take a leisurely stroll around the vibrant Chidlow Farmers Market, to be held at Lake Leschenaultia September 27 & 28 (10am to 2pm).

Kalamunda

Youth focused: Piesse Brook, Kalamunda, City of Kalamunda.

Get the kids to swap their screens for scenery, as they walk by towering trees, discover ancient granite outcrops, and meander along the winding creeks of Kalamunda National Park IRL. The engaging Piesse Brook Interpretive Trail leads to Rocky Pool, a beloved local hiking spot for many generations. The 3.4km return trail, following pretty Piesse Brook, is perfect for those eager to adventure in the great outdoors. Navigate a few steep sections that add an element of fun and exploration, before pausing at the stunning natural amphitheater of Rocky Pool. This guided hike is perfect for adventurous families, with fun scavenger hunt sheets provided.

Armadale

Seniors-focused: Armadale Settlers Common, Bedfordale, City of Armadale.

It’s time to slow down the pace on this gentle 4.5km loop trail, for a relaxed hiking experience in good company. Explore the rich biodiversity of Bedfordale’s Settlers Common, while wandering beneath towering jarrah and marri trees. As you enjoy a late afternoon wander, listen for the distinctive “krurr-rr” call of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos and you may be lucky enough to spy grazing kangaroos in the peaceful clearings, along with sweeping city views. This trail is perfect for older walkers, so why not bring along your parents, or even active grandparents to join you for a stroll at Settlers Common.

Serpentine-Jarrahdale

Experienced: Kitty’s Gorge, Jarrahdale, Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

Ready to take your bushwalking skills to the next level? Or are you already a seasoned hiker? The challenging 16km Kitty’s Gorge return trail awaits those ready to push their limits across rugged terrain and steep gravel climbs. As you tread this trail, you’ll be rewarded with pristine wilderness, the breathtaking Gooralong Brook Falls, before entering Serpentine National Park and pausing at the iconic Serpentine Falls. Here, refresh your feet in the crystal-clear natural pool, before journeying back through the magnificent gorge.
