This lovely trail follows along the contour of the hill and has large sections of level walking trail with views out to the city and over the Swan Coastal Plain. There are steep sections where the channel crosses several valleys along its path. It is abundant with wildflowers through the months August to November and popular with the black cockatoos.

The trail can be accessed from Lloyd Hughes Park (Martin Street) or from Canning or Turner Roads in Kelmscott. Accessing the trail north from Canning Road, the trail to the site of the old pumping station is approximately 7 kilometres return.

At approximately 16-kilometre long, the full Contour Channel comprises a series of open concrete channels connected with cast iron pipe siphons over the gullies. The channel follows the contours of the Darling Scarp between Canning Dam and Martin and is approximately 1.5 metres wide at the base with raking sides at 45degrees banking up to the natural ground level.

It was constructed between 1935 and 1936 as a depression era public works project to carry drinking water, gravity fed, following the natural contours of the Roleystone and Kelmscott hills to a pumping station at the top of the hill in Martin and was in use until 1975.
