We don’t want to show off, but the Perth Hills has to be the place in Perth to bask in autumnal leaves. The month of May is when Mother Nature really turns up her vibrant autumn colours. In the Perth Hills, there are a ton of places to spot leaves falling gently from the trees and creating a colourful carpet.
The deciduous trees of the Perth Hills’ leafy parks, rows of orchard trees and lush vineyards are caught up in a technicolour dream this autumn. Here are the best places to find autumn leaves in the Perth Hills:
Orchards of the Perth Hills
Raeburn Orchard is a photographer’s paradise. During May this family-run Roleystone spot offers up row upon row of Persimmon trees changing colour to their vibrant red hue. Take a stroll through the orchard and picnic amongst the trees, soaking up all the autumn vibes. Buy seasonal fruits at the on-site shop, along with gourmet preserves, local honey, ice cream and artisan crafts.
Walliston’s S & R Orchards hosts an annual Autumn Festival during May. As well as basking in all the golden glory, kids will love the animal farm, tractor rides, and many photo props to discover amongst the stone fruit trees. The orchard is a beautiful place to take photos. The colourful foliage and themed vintage phone booths, piano, caravan, swings and more, make for a fun day out.
The Bickley Valley
Looking for a countryside experience, that’s close to the city? Head to the Bickley Valley! This hidden gem, near Kalamunda, is home to boutique vineyards, distilleries and orchards. Taste hand-crafted wines, ciders, and spirits from local producers, whilst enjoying the orange rows of grape vines throughout the Valley.
Picture Perfect Parks
The leafy Mundaring Sculpture Park is a beautiful spot for a picnic and play. While the kids run amok on the huge playground, the adults can treat themselves to a coffee from the Steep Hill truck. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail also runs through the park, perfect for a cycle or walk.
Stirk Park, in the heart of Kalamunda, has well-established trees that change their colour to yellow, orange and deep red in autumn, creating a stunning contrast with the green native trees. The memorial walk of deciduous trees honours service personnel from World War 2.
Araluen Botanical Park is sensational in any season, with autumn being no exception. Araluen’s deciduous trees put on a display of red, orange, yellow, and gold tones. You can expect to see ash, Canadian maple, Chinese pistachio, ornamental cherry, Japanese maple, and more. Nearby, Roleystone’s Borrello Park is a quiet neighbourhood gem, popular with Hills locals.
Leafy Fred Jacoby Park is a spectacular spot to bring your four-legged friends for an autumn adventure. A short walk trail, featuring a collection of trees from around the world, includes one of the biggest English Oak Trees in WA. The beautiful spot in Beelu National Park is perfect for a picnic and play in nature, and is found close to Mundaring Weir.
