The final concert showcases the Darlington Ensemble in all our formations – as a piano trio in Mel Bonis’s Soir-Matin, in Mozart’s String Quartet K428 and in Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet! Shostakovich wrote the quintet for himself to play with his friends and colleagues the Beethoven Quartet -the work was immediately popular with the public, receiving so many encores that people called it ‘a five-movement work with seven movements’.
