Mundaring to Kalamunda Self Drive

From Mundaring, take a scenic drive along Mundaring Weir Road through the dense Beelu National Park (home of the Kalamunda Mountain Bike Park) to the historic township of Kalamunda. Make your first stop the Perth Hills Kalamunda Visitor Centre, also home to the Zig Zag Gallery. Local experts can suggest itineraries, whether your interests are in bushwalking, food and wine, history, art, nature, and culture. The Kalamunda region has it all.

Love history? Explore the adjoining Kalamunda History Village. WA’s largest open air folk museum is home to heritage buildings, and a restored steam locomotive at the old Kalamunda Train Station.

Grab a map to follow the Kalamunda ArtWalk, Fairy Door, and Town Centre Heritage trails, plus there are many boutique gift shops, pubs and cafes to enjoy along the way. If you visit on a weekend, hit one of the morning markets. Leafy Stirk Park is the place for a picnic and play at the adventure playground and skate park. In summer, splash and slide at Kalamunda Water Park.

Surrounded by national and regional parks, Kalamunda is the northern terminus for the internationally acclaimed Bibbulmun Track. Why not pull on your hiking boots and walk a small section? In late winter and spring, visit the spectacular Lesmurdie Falls. The lookout platform over the gushing waterfall has incredible views to the city and beyond.

Nearby, weave around the country roads, driving past the vineyards and orchards of the Bickley Valley Wine Trail. Here there are many family-run cellar doors, distilleries, cideries, farm gates, and quaint cafes to stop at and savour.

The historic Perth Observatory runs evening star-gazing tours. The Worl Wangkiny mural commemorates 60,000 years of Noongar celestial storytelling. Nature lovers can take a day or nocturnal tour of Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to meet native animals of the Perth Hills.

End your day with a sunset cruise down the Zig Zag Scenic Drive. There’s so much to squeeze into just one day, so why not stay overnight? Boutique accommodation options include quaint bed and breakfasts and secluded bushland retreats.
